Army SSG Jason L. Letterman lost both of his legs, suffered Traumatic Brain Injuries and fractured his shoulder and pelvis from an IED explosion in Farasiyah, Iraq in May 2008. SSG Letterman was part of the 4th BCT, 3rd ID, conducting a mounted patrol that was initially told by local town leaders that there were no "bad people" or weapons in the village. Upon interviewing local residents, the patrol was led to an area in question. Finding a cache of weapons, ammunition, bombs, and materials for homemade explosives, they waited for more than four hours for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to arrive and destroy the cache.

SSG Letterman was injured when the gun truck in which he was riding in rolled over a pressure wire while returning to his base, causing an explosion that threw the vehicle 20 feet into the air. All of the soldiers inside the vehicle received serious injuries; the driver dying as a result of his mortal wounds. Airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany, SSG Letterman eventually arrived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he remains today, undergoing therapies and treatments for his injuries.

SSG Letterman and his wife, Elena, have three sons and are looking forward to the day they can live together as a family again. Jason enjoys hand-cycling, hunting and fishing. He would like to further his education by going to college and eventually would like to work for the Veterans Affairs Office. SSG Letterman’s primary goal is to continue to learn to walk with his prosthetics and focus his energies on being the best husband and father he can be. Jason and his family are looking forward to the freedoms and the barrier-free environment a specially adapted home will afford him so that they will be able to focus on family and recovery as they all look to the future.

She is the daughter of Kimberly Harmon of Singleton Hill Court, Beaufort, S.C. Nue is a 2008 graduate of Battery Creek High School, Beaufort.

Air Force Airman Elaina C. Driver graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. She is the daughter of John Driver of Bluffton, S.C. Driver is a 2009 graduate of Gaffney High School, S.C.

Army Pfc. Shanna M. Holmes has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. She is the daughter of Verna and Matthew Holmes of Sheppard Road, Beaufort, S.C. Holmes graduated in 1999 from Beaufort High School, and received an associate degree in 2003 from the University of South Carolina, Beaufort.

Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq. Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq's economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq's sovereignty and independence as a democracy.

Lynsky is a military police member of the 178th Military Police Company, Monroe, Ga. He has three years of military service.

He is the son of Gale E. Lynsky of Ganet Crossing, Savannah, Ga. The specialist is a 2006 graduate of Windsor Forest High School, Savannah.

Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet's officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet's intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina. The cadet command assesses each cadet's performance and progress in officer traits, qualities and professionalism while attending the course. The sergeant, a electrical system craftsman with 20 years of military service, is assigned to the 437th Airlift Wing, Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. He is the son of Earl and Brenda Mitchell of Evelina Road, and grandson of Pauline Holmes of Pauline Manor, all of Hilton Head, S.C. Mitchell graduated in 1988 from Hilton Head High School, and received an associate degree in 2004 from the Community College of the Air Force.

Army Spec. Jeda R. Delaney has deployed to Iraq to support the mission of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. Armed Forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the people of Iraq. Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq's economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq's sovereignty and independence as a democracy.

Combat Control Apprentice Course at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. The course is designed to train and qualify enlisted and officer candidates as combat air controllers. Combat controllers are among the first groups to deploy during a U.S. military special operation or airlift mission. Students are trained to operate under the most difficult and hostile conditions and survey and secure air drop or landing zones; set up communications and function as air traffic controllers to safely guide military aircraft into and out of a landing area. Additional specialized training includes combat control tower operations, combat survival, underwater egress operations, airborne (parachute) operations to assist combat controllers infiltrate forward areas via static-line or free-fall parachuting, scuba diving or over land insertion methods to control air traffic operations until more permanent facilities are established. Cody J. Hollifield has been awarded an Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarship. The cadet was selected on the basis of comprehensive tests scores, high school scholastic achievement, school officials' evaluations, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement. The scholarship is designed to cover the cost of tuition, textbooks, laboratory and incidental fees, and a non-taxable monthly stipend of at least $300 and up to $500 during the school year. Upon graduating from college and completing the ROTC program, the cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Air Force. The new lieutenants select and enter various career fields to train as pilots, navigators, engineers, medical, personnel, business management fields, and special operations.
