With no real big holidays on the horizon this month (other than St. Patrick’s Day which is not nearly as highly profitable as Christmas or Halloween), the spring is often a time of recharging and restoration… for our homes, yards, and wardrobes.
Sure, there may not be holiday specials or slashed frenzied price changing, but there are definite bargains specific to this month.
Here is the lowdown on what moms (and dads) can buy cheaper in March:
1. Winter Outdoor Gear
While the best times to buy winter gear are the summer months, this year's warm winter will cause the cold weather gear to go on clearance earlier. Now is the time to peruse those skis and skates you’ve always wanted.
2. Luggage
The most noticeable price drops for luggage are in late August, but there are some very good deals to be had in March as many prepare for summer trips.
3. Winter Apparel
In March, you’ll also find bargains on coats, gloves, hats, etc… right now. Just yesterday, I found gloves discounted from $25 down to just three bucks.
4. Houses
It might be a no-brainer but people like to move once the school year has ended. If you look around your neighborhood, you’ll notice that there are more ‘For Sale’ signs right about now than usual. Plus, interest rates are still incredibly low. We bought our house in the spring, closed in May and had a smooth end of June move-in.
5. Perfume
The biggest time for perfume purchases are December and February, so now that March has arrived, look for prices to go down. The best fragrance buys will not be in the department stores. You’ll find the highest discounts on perfume at warehouse stores, like Sam’s Club.
6. Frozen Food
Did you know that March is National Frozen Food Month ? I saw the large advertisements draped across my supermarket window announcing frozen food month along with the slashed prices. And oh, how convenient those frozen veggies can be when hustling to make dinner.
7. China and Flatware
All those June weddings are just around the corner which means stores are stocking up China and flatware for all the upcoming bridal registries. It also means that there will be bargains, so even those of us that already have collections can benefit by getting some new pieces for our existing sets.
8. Air Conditioners
It's still cold in March so this will probably be the last month to find deals on air conditioners. Once the spring officially starts in April, we’ll turn our thoughts to the lazy days of summer and retailers will up those prices on cooling units. They will also try to unload all units from last season before temperatures warm up. If you need a new air conditioner this year, get it now!
9. Gardening Tools
Spring is in the air so home supply stores are loading up the summer gardening tools and equipment that customers need to restore their yards after a long winter.
10. Fresh Fruit & Veggies
Spring means signals the return of many fresh vegetable favorites, such as artichokes, asparagus, grapefruit, horseradish, leeks, lettuce, oranges, and shallots. So far, prices seem good. I picked up a bag of navel oranges for $1.99 last week. Nothing beats fresh seasonal fruit for getting kids on the healthy eating track.
