AMERICAN IDOL  SEASON 7

Everything you need to know is right here.

MARK'S BIO

I am doing exactly what I wanted to do almost all my life.

When I was in public school in New York, I would sleep with a small transistor radio (am I dating myself?) under the pillow and fall asleep to the sound of the DJ playing the music, hoping one day I could be where he is. Now I am. And I never take that for granted.

I worked in college radio from 1973-1976 and moved down south in 1977 and I never looked back. I started on 98.7 playing country music, then did a talk format, and then began playing the soft rock we now play. But the music is only a small part of what I love about this job. Part of it is the people I get to meet and who listen to me. Part of it is doing cool things in the community. I have worked with such groups as The United Way, Earth Day, Keep America Beautiful, and Beaufort Humane Association. The animals are my passion. I still serve on the groups Board of Directors (now renamed Palmetto Animal League) and have four cats and one dog--all rescues. I love 'em to death. You can find out more about PAL here.

We have done some awesome things at The River, like our Tsunami Relief effort last year and the work we did to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, filling the entire Mediaplay parking lot with donations of bottled water, shoes, childrens' toys, pet food and everything else that came our way. I never imagined we'd generate as much as we did.

One of my favorite challenges is my annual "Christmas Wish." Every year, for the first two weeks in December, I read letters from area social workers and hospital staff about families impacted by cancer. These are families that have very little to begin with, and there is no hope that the children in these families will have any type of joy this holiday season, either because a child or a parent is undergoing cancer treatment.  We started this in 1999 and raised an average of $1000 per family--I was left totally drained and extremely moved by the outpouring of compassion. It gets better each year.

The 8th annual "Christmas Wish"  was a huge success! Between cash donations, gift cards, and services donated to our Wish famlies, you helped generate around $30,000!  We have heard from several families already about what a difference you made in their holidays and lives--expecting nothing and being surprised at shopping sprees of over $1200. It's truly amazing...and I thank you for being a part of it.

ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.  If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? That is the purpose of this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.  The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).  The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this
purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service Personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE".  For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Please share this with friends, co-workers and family.

HAPPY "FIRE PREVENTION WEEK"
Tuesday 10-07-2008 9:13am ET

Home fires are often easily preventable tragedies. Educating yourself and your family is the first step to preventing or surviving a household fire. Installing smoke detectors, practicing a home evacuation plan, and learning proper use of a fire extinguisher are all easy and important steps every family should take. Below are some key fire safety tips:

·         Install a minimum of one smoke detector outside sleeping areas and at least one per floor of your home.

·         Test and clean your smoke detectors at least once a month and replace batteries twice each year.

·         Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and know how to use it.

·         Create and practice a home evacuation plan.

·         Keep all exits clear of clutter.

·         Check that windows open and close easily.

·         There should be at least two exits from every room.

·         Never smoke in bed or when drowsy.

·         Keep space heaters at least 4 feet away from combustibles.

·         If you have a fireplace keep a screen in place at all times, have the chimney checked and cleaned periodically.

·         If a gas water heater is present, do not store flammable materials in the same area.

·         Store flammable materials in the proper containers.

·         Keep matches and lighters away from children.

·         Talk to your children about fire safety.

·         Install a carbon monoxide detector if your home has gas appliances or you park in an attached garage.

·         Do not overload electrical outlets.

·         Never leave burning candles unattended.

·         Always stay in the kitchen when cooking.

·         Keep towels and other flammable materials away from the stove.

Installing and maintaining working smoke detectors in your house is a vital part of keeping your home fire safe. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, sixty-five percent of reported home fire deaths occurred in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. In fact, an estimated 890 lives could be saved each year if all homes had working smoke alarms.

Nationwide, more than 4,000 people die in fires each year. Fire sprinklers save lives, reduce property loss, and can even help cut homeowners insurance premiums. Installing both smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system reduces the risk of death in a home fire by 82% as compared to having neither.

This Fire Prevention Week, at a minimum, take time to make sure your family is safe:

ü  Make sure smoke alarms are working and everyone in your house responds to an alarm activation.

ü  Develop and practice a “home evacuation plan”.

ü  Know two ways out of each room.

For more information on how to keep your family safe go to www.savannahfire.org. For information on fire safety presentations call 912-644-5957.

FLU SHOTS
Tuesday 09-30-2008 7:09pm ET

The Chatham County Health Department will begin administering flu shots on Wednesday, October 1, and no appointment is necessary.

Influenza (flu) is a highly infectious virus that causes high fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and coughing. The best way to prevent getting the flu is to get a flu vaccination every year. The flu shot is especially important for people who are at high risk for flu complications, including :

  • Children ages 6 months to five years
  •  Pregnant women
  •  Those 50 and older
  •  People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
  •  People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  •  People who live with or work with those at high risk for flu complications

Medicaid and Medicare clients should bring their insurance information when arriving for a flu shot. For those not covered by Medicaid or Medicare, the cost is $25, payable by cash or check. This year’s flu season could hit with a vengeance, so don’t wait. Get vaccinated now.
