Ashley currently is fostering Roxy (Named Sonya when she was in Animal Control) is a 40 lb mixed breed, we are guessing some sort of pit and hound. Her estimated age is 1.5 years. She writes:
Roxy came to live with our family after we met her at Chatham County Animal Control in December 2012. We were drawn to her because she was so friendly, submissive, and gentle around our son.
When she came to us, she was not housebroken and appeared to know no commands. We have worked with Roxy for a short time and already she has learned certain commands and manners. She is extremely sweet and energetic. She also has not had an accident in the house since her 4th day here (due to a frequent potty schedule and crate training.)
After consulting with a well-known dog behaviorist here in the area about a few things, we’ve come to the conclusion that although we are doing everything that we can for Roxy right now, it will be difficult and not practical to successfully and completely blend her into our family at this time. She has a few behaviors that, although very correctable, (mouthing while playing, jumping) are difficult to safely remedy with a 1.5 year-old human in the mix. In the behaviorist’s words, we would most likely be the perfect placement for her if it weren’t for a toddler in the house.
In order to do what’s best for Roxy and our son, we are more than happy to take care of and train her for now, but she will need a new foster home or forever home soon that can allow her to explore, learn, exercise, and receive love and discipline without children under the age of 10 (as recommended by the behaviorist). Sadly, we are not able to fully integrate her into our home, and no dog should live a segregated life from her pack.
Please take a moment and check out Roxy! Share this link on facebok or twitter if you don’t mind helping us get the word out. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting or fostering her, please contact Chatham County Animal Control at 912-351-6750 or call our family for more info about Roxy at 315-447-2528.
