THIS YEAR FOR HALLOWEEN, TRY SOMETHING NEW!
Trick-or-Treat for Hunger
Final Collection Date – October 25th, 2008

THIS YEAR...instead of trick or treating for candy, how about doing it for canned foods for the hungry! It's easy and it leaves you and your community with a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.

We are looking for people in the community to conduct traditional food drives by requesting a collection barrel from us to fill up.  We are also looking for civic groups, youth groups, families, neighbor associations, etc to adopt neighborhoods and canvass them with flyers about placing their canned food items beside their mailboxes on October 25th, national Make a Difference Day.  These same volunteers would need to ride through the neighborhoods they have adopted on the 25th to collect the food on behalf of Second Harvest.  We already have several neighborhoods adopted (The Landings, Long Point, Causton Bluff…)
Anyone who simply wished to participate by dropping off canned protein items may do so at any Sea Island Bank or at any Savannah Fire Station.

How to Trick-or-Treat for HungerPrepare for Your Food Drive
  • Complete the Food Drive Registration Form.
  • Set a goal for the amount of food you plan to collect.
  • Contact Second Harvest to provide collection barrels.
  • Distribute flyers to let your congregation, customers, neighbors, or students know when and where they can drop off food donations.
  • Involve family, friends, community members, and co-workers.
  • Make it FUN! For example, if you are having a fall gathering, make a canned food item the “entry” price to attend.
  • Students who need community service hours can organize a neighbor food drive by distributing flyers in the neighborhood and having an approved central collection point or by going door-to-door to collect food on October 25th.
 Conduct Your Food Drive
  • Ask for food items that Second Harvest needs the most to help local families meat & protein items such as: canned chicken, ham, mackerel, meat spreads, salmon, sardines, tuna, peanut butter, beef stew, canned soup, canned beans or peas.
  • Encourage friendly competition among participants.
 Conclude Your Food Drive
  • Call Second Harvest to schedule a pick up time for your donations to the food bank.
  • Thank the people who supported your drive!

The American Red Cross opens its Savannah donor center two Sundays per month for platelet donations. Platelets are the component in blood that enables it to clot. Patients with illnesses that include cancer, leukemia and blood diseases frequently need platelet transfusions. A small child with leukemia can require as many as 30 to 40 units of platelets per week during a hospital stay.  Without enough platelets, a patient can bleed to death. The Savannah Donor Center located at 25 Tibet Avenue will be open the first and third Sunday* of each month from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm for platelet and whole blood donations. Platelet donors can watch the NFL game of their choice on their own television suspended above the donor bed. Appointments are needed for platelet donations and can be made by calling (912) 961-5765. Most healthy people age 17 and older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets.
